Many good texts in neuroscience have been published in recent years, including the following:
Purves D, et. al. Neuroscience. 2nd edition, 1997. An excellent text with wide coverage and many good illustrations.
Kingsley RE. Concise Text of Neuroscience. 2nd edition, 2001. Text assigned in several previous years. Clear and up-to-date. Covers material at about the same level as the course. Many clinical "problem solving" examples.
Bear MF, Conners BW, Paradiso MA. Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain. 2nd edition 2002. Another good, comprehensive text, perhaps a bit easier than Purves. Many good illustration.
Kandel ER, Schwartz JH, Jessell TM. Principles of Neural Science. 4th edition. 2000. Encyclopedic coverage of neuroscience. The standard graduate level text in the field.
Kandel ER, Schwartz JH, Jessell TM. Essentials of Neural Science and Behavior. 1995. A shorter version of the above. Good coverage of higher functions of the nervous system but omits many of the usual topics including several included in our course.
Haines DE and Lancom JA. Neuroanatomy: An Atlas of Structures, Sections, and Systems. 2004. Strong on neuroanatomy with many clear diagrams of pathways and structures.
Gilman S, Newman SW. Manter and Gantz's Essentials of Clinical Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology. 10th edition, 2002. Fundamentals of neuroanatomy, brief coverage of neurophysiology.
